V2G has just completed a two-year trial with OVO energy. OVO energy is trying to make the UK have more green spaces. They are doing this by; tree planting promise, their e-bike scheme and also by reducing home energy by 100% renewable electricity.

OVO energy, has recently conducted the worlds biggest trial of bi-directional technology. This was to see how functional it is to use in everyday life.

V2G are working with Nissan, Indra, Cenex and Kaluza.

What is the difference between V2G and normal home charging?

The standard home-charging, charges the EV by using the electricity from people’s home supply. It is known as an unidirectional or one-way.

However, with bi-directional chargers, the electricity can function both ways.

This means that, the electric from the EV goes straight back to the grid and is known as a two way.

It is a known fact that there is a high demand of energy at peak times.

This has a knock on effect, which is causing electricity prices to rise. Not only is the cost the problem, but also this could cause surges or even blackouts.

It is said that, UK vehicles on average spend 96% of the time parked up, which 73% of that time is when the vehicles parked at home.

Taking into account how V2G works, this could be the perfect chance for owners to leave their vehicles charging at home and use it as an energy supply.

This would allow the battery to be sitting dormant once it is fully charged, as well as the energy going straight back to the grid.

It has been estimated that, there will be approximately 140-240 million EVs on the road worldwide by 2030.

How easy is it to get V2G installed?

V2G

Taking into consideration that the V2G is on trial and there are still some modifications to be done, the installation is easily installed.

The charger is installed by OVO energy at your home and is then set-up by a Kaluza app. This app monitors buying and selling of energy with the grid.

However, this could change depending on the improvements they make.

The Kaluza app calculates how much you use your EV on a daily basis and ensures that the battery level stays above that figure.

The app allows you to override the settings for you to make changes, for example; if you are going on a long journey. The override settings is called a boost function.

The app takes care of everything and the only thing you need to do is plug-in your EV.

If this is the future of charging your EV, what a brilliant way to not only save energy by charging your EV, but also saving money!

Will this cut down the home energy bills?

The V2G helps cut the costs of your home energy bills. It cuts the costs by using energy from the grid to charge your vehicle at the cheapest rates and tariffs (overnight) and then putting it back to the grid during the day.

It has been said that, as the app controls the buying and selling of energy, the trial has shown that you could end up paying £0 over a 12 month period.

However, this will depend on the rates, as they are increasing.

V2G’s Trial

OVO Energy’s V2G trial has now ended and many people have benefited from the trial.

There has been so many positive comments with the trial, not only saving money and energy, but also not having to stress about leaving their EV’s on charge.

The only question left is; Will V2G be the future of EV charging? It is believed so!
